Hewan Areaya

Prior to joining Humanity United, Hewan was a Senior Program Manager at Global Fund for Women, where she co-led transformative initiatives such as participatory grantmaking for gender and climate justice movements and the Medical Abortion Accompaniment Fund.

Previously, she served as a Legal Fellow at Women Enabled International, an organization that advocates at the intersection of gender and disability. In her home country of Ethiopia, Hewan co-founded Siiqqee Scholars, an initiative aimed at empowering young girls through education.

Hewan is a 2017 Mandela Washington Fellow and a recipient of the Open Society Foundation Civil Society Leadership Award in 2019. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Addis Ababa University and a Master of Laws from the University of Wisconsin. Passionate about trust-based philanthropy and shifting power to grassroots actors, Hewan continues to advocate for decolonizing philanthropy and fostering equitable systems that amplify marginalized voices. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and watching crime documentaries.
