Born and raised in Southern Maryland, August is a lifelong local blue crab, raw oyster, and baseball lover. Prior to joining HU, he was trained by Advocates for Youth to organize and win issue-based campaigns around youth-led reproductive justice. His organizing work continued alongside Black and trans-led organizations across Maryland and D.C., which led to his six years in resource mobilization, resource organizing, and leadership development on the local level.
His political development was sharpened by a Delegation to Cuba with the International People’s Assembly, and subsequent commitments to actualize the Just Transition Framework locally through his work with Mosaic Cooperative. Over the years, August has intentionally developed and stewarded relationships and resources toward local, self-determined solutions for safety and wellness. He hopes to continue deepening that commitment through organized relationships within HU.
August is a descendant of the oldest Black family in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, and takes great pride in continuing his ancestral traditions of stewarding land, water, and legacy. August holds a Bachelor of Science in English from Towson University; is the Vice Chair of the Policy Committee on the Governor’s Commission on LGBTQIA+ Affairs; and is a 2023-2024 Future Harvest Farmer Trainee. In his free time, August enjoys landscaping, reading, and spending time ‘down the road’ with family.
