A Path Towards Healing and Reconciliation in South Sudan: Distributing “The Book of Forgiving”

The Book of Forgiving, by Bishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter, Mpho Tutu, is a manual on the transformative art of forgiveness. Since its publication, Desmond Tutu put out a Global Forgiveness Challenge, in which he invites each of us to embrace the act of forgiving as a way of changing the world.

“Forgiveness is nothing less than the way we heal the world. We heal the world by healing each and every one of our hearts. The process is simple, but it is not easy.” ― Bishop Desmond Tutu, The Book of Forgiving

Earlier this month, 2,000 copies of The Book of Forgiving arrived in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, and were distributed to churches, NGOS, universities, and other organizations that will share its message throughout the country.  Since the December 2013 outbreak in violence, South Sudanese communities have been divided along political and ethnic lines, while peace negotiations falter and the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.

Humanity United is honored to support the partnership of South Sudan Women United; Catholic University in Juba; the Committee for National Healing, Peace & Reconciliation; Catholic Relief Services; and South Sudan Women’s Empowerment Network in the distribution of these books.  It is our sincere hope that The Book of Forgiving will serve as a tool to support the people of South Sudan as they seek peace, in part, through healing and reconciliation.
