The ousting of Omar al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan cruelly for 30 years, leaves Sudan’s future in a fragile state. This is a dangerous moment. While Bashir is gone, there is concern his corrupt regime remains. Governance is unclear, military loyalties are divided into rival factions, and the citizens whose protests have galvanized the world are now contemplating their strategies during a complex transition of power. Despite the dangers, the people of Sudan have shown the world that they will be defined not by the injustices they have endured but by the resilience and hope that have carried them to this moment.

We know from our experience in Sudan that local leaders and communities carry the wisdom and courage they need to build a peaceful and prosperous future. So often at critical and catalytic moments like this, these wise voices can be pushed to the margins. As deep conversations and strategies for sustained peace, justice, and accountability emerge, these brave voices should remain an integral part of this transition. Their demands have not been met and we must all listen to what they are saying so that they can create the peaceful and prosperous Sudan they have sought for so long.
