Our Asia Pacific Seafood Team, alongside partnering organizations, conducted studies on the conditions within the Shrimp export industry in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, as well as a regional study.
Indonesia:
This research was a collaborative effort by three Indonesian non-governmental organizations: ELSAM (Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy) based in Jakarta, Akatiga (Center of Social Analysis) in Bandung, and the Migunani Research Institute in Yogyakarta.
The study was conceived by Migunani, who also led the writing, while Akatiga coordinated on-the-ground data collection, and ELSAM contributed to research design, analysis, and market insights alongside input from Dr. Katrina Nakamura of the Sustainability Incubator. Together, all three organizations shaped the research from start to finish.
Vietnam:
This report provides an analysis of field-based research in Vietnam’s shrimp sector, conducted in July 2023 through May 2024 by independent researchers Mr. Dinh Lap and Ms. Angel Ysik, with Dr. Ngo Huong, Le Ut Tinh, and Tran Minh Quan of the Center for Development and Integration, and a Vietnamese researcher
remaining anonymous to protect some worker identities. The research, including
the market component, analysis, and report-writing were completed by Dr.
Katrina Nakamura of the Sustainability Incubator.
The Sustainability Incubator conducts primary research worldwide to stand up
to modern slavery in fisheries and aquaculture, with awareness that respecting
human and labor rights are a constant challenge in commodity sectors like seafood
because market prices and working conditions are linked and ever-changing.
Regional:
This report provides an overall assessment of research results from field-based
research in Vietnam, Indonesia and India, research into the business model in
the major producing countries for whiteleg shrimp (Litopeneaus vannamei), and
quantitative analysis of prices and costs at every tier of the shrimp supply chain,
August 2023 through July 2024. India research was conducted by the Corporate
Accountability Lab, Indonesia by Akatiga and Atmajaya, and Vietnam by the
Center for Development and Integration and independent experts (Ha Noi, An
Giang) and the Sustainability Incubator. The overall research, including the market component, analysis, and report writing, was conducted by Dr. Katrina Nakamura of The Sustainability Incubator.
