Sandy Nathan Joins Humanity United as Managing Director of Operations

We are excited to announce that Sandy Nathan will be joining us as Humanity United’s new Managing Director of Operations effective June 1. In this newly created position, Sandy will lead the operations teams across the organization and help ensure that our leadership, infrastructure, policies, and culture are aligned with our values and help deliver on our mission.

“I am thrilled to welcome Sandy to the Humanity United,” said Srik Gopal, Managing Partner of Humanity United. “Her deep commitment to social justice, people-centered philosophy, as well as her executive leadership experience will be invaluable as we strive to best serve communities and partners around the world. Sandy will help us design and implement the right organizational systems and supports during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Sandy previously served as the Interim Executive Director for the Astraea Foundation for Justice where she provided organizational design and strategic leadership to an organization in transition. Prior to that, she served as Interim Executive Director of Philanthropy Southwest. Over the years, Sandy has held several senior leadership roles in community foundations. In the past, she was the Senior Vice President of Philanthropic and Community Services at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in Tucson. In this role she was the chief strategist for the foundation’s grantmaking, community investment opportunities and led in the use of diverse capital streams including equity and debt. She also oversaw the work of CFSA’s affiliated partner organizations, including the African American Initiative, the Alliance (LGBTQ) Fund, the Latino Giving Circle, and the Santa Cruz Community Foundation. She also served as Vice President for Grants and Loans at the Marin Community Foundation, where she oversaw all grantmaking initiatives.

Sandy’s background also includes executive leadership in nonprofits at the national and local levels, including the National Council on Aging, AARP, and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Her public sector career highlights include Department Head for the City of Oakland, and City and County of San Francisco. She also served as Deputy County Executive for Santa Clara County where she oversaw criminal justice, public safety, and social services functions for the county.

In the Managing Director of Operations role, Sandy will oversee budgeting and finance, legal compliance, human resources, and IT and security. She will be a key member of HU’s Leadership Team, reporting to the Managing Partner.

“Humanity United’s commitment to helping create a world with greater dignity and peace deeply resonates with me,” said Sandy Nathan. “I’ve focused my career in ensuring equity and social justice for marginalized individuals and communities of color. Fighting against any form of oppression and for justice and equality has been at the core of my efforts. I am honored and excited to join Humanity United and look forward to working alongside such a dedicated team and committed network of partners.”

We are energized by this new addition to our team and look forward to counting on Sandy’s knowledge, experience, and expertise to help strengthen our work and impact.
