HU Statement on the Termination of Thousands of Foreign Assistance Programs
HU addresses the impact of the Trump Administration’s termination of foreign assistance grants on American leadership and humanitarian aid programming.
HU addresses the impact of the Trump Administration’s termination of foreign assistance grants on American leadership and humanitarian aid programming.
The Trump Administration’s recent move to terminate nearly 10,000 State Department and USAID foreign assistance grants will have an unprecedented impact on millions of people around the world and on the safety and security of Americans. Ending these programs without a transparent and thorough review process is irresponsible and undermines the influence of American leadership and foreign policy.
With more than 90% of USAID’s foreign aid contracts eliminated and over 4,000 State Department grants canceled, global assistance programming has effectively been reduced by $60 billion, a decision that will likely make the U.S. less safe, secure, and prosperous.
For nearly six decades, USAID has provided development and humanitarian assistance in the form of medical aid, disease prevention and care, shelter for displaced persons, and rapid response to famine and natural disasters. These terminations will have a dire impact on the health, safety, and lives of millions of vulnerable people around the world and across the U.S., including those at risk of human trafficking and conflict.
We urge the State Department to reverse these terminations and restore critical investments immediately.
