Humanity United Signs Memorandum of Understanding with USAID in Support of Localization and Inclusive Peacebuilding

Washington, D.C. – Humanity United (HU) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID’s) Center for Conflict and Violence Prevention (CVP) to inform USAID’s localization and inclusive peacebuilding efforts.

USAID continues to reiterate its commitment to localization and ensuring that its work is responsive to local communities, strengthens local systems, and leads to more sustainable peace and development. As an organization that has long advocated for policies and programs that promote peace and reconciliation and prevent atrocities, HU is well positioned to facilitate meaningful discussions and convene diverse stakeholders that can come together to engage with USAID in advancing the localization agenda.

HU and USAID both believe that localization and inclusion must go hand in hand to avoid reinforcing discriminatory and unequal power structures within local contexts while effectively centering decision-making with local actors. As Melanie Greenberg, Managing Director with HU stated:

“Humanity United is honored to be engaging with USAID on such an ambitious and timely initiative. USAID has made a clear commitment to recognizing the agency and power of communities closest to conflict, and forging funding pathways that build inclusivity and support sustainable peace. We look forward to a fruitful partnership that centers a wide diversity of voices and interests, during a critical time for peace and inclusive development.”

This MOU establishes a three-year collaboration between USAID’s CVP and HU to elevate and share the perspectives and priorities of local peacebuilders. Through this relationship, HU and CVP are working towards advancing best practices related to localization and inclusive peacebuilding; facilitating information gathering and sharing through structured feedback sessions with local peacebuilders and USAID Missions; and creating a network of domestic and civil society organizations to provide input and guidance as localization practices evolve.
