WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today Humanity United announced new funding awards to three participating teams from TechCamp Nepal that are developing technology tools to better protect Nepali migrants who work or aspire to work abroad. F1Soft Group, World Education, Inc., and Caravan Studios with engineering firm CH2M as an implementing partner, have received combined funding of over $300,000 USD from Humanity United to further develop their tech-based solutions. Public-facing mobile-app solutions based in Nepal have also been awarded a Facebook FBstart accelerated package.
TechCamp Nepal–hosted by Humanity United, the U.S. Embassy in Nepal, and the State Department Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons–brought together participants from local and international technology experts, businesses and entrepreneurs, civil society groups, and government representatives from the U.S., Nepal, and Qatar for three days in September. The purpose of the event in Kathmandu was to pursue tech solutions that reduce exploitation and strengthen protection for Nepali workers. The solutions selected for development and implementation through this process focus on addressing two key challenges for Nepali migrants: vulnerabilities caused by fees and barriers to resolving worker grievances.
“Persistent challenges often require new ideas and energy. The development and implementation of these solutions are exciting steps in the right direction,” said Catherine Chen, who leads the initiative at Humanity United.
Given the size and scope of these challenges, no single organization, individual, or government effort will solve all the problems migrant workers face. However, these new approaches have the potential to address the numerous challenges that exist both in Nepal and in destination countries. These projects include:
- F1Soft Group and its subsidiary eSewa will pilot a migration payments through mobile money service, which will bring a more transparent market alternative to the current system that relies on all-cash transactions.
- World Education will build web and mobile applications featuring financial literacy and management tools and safe migration modules. Workers will be able to use both as they prepare to migrate in Nepal and upon arrival in destination countries.
- Caravan Studios & CH2M will pioneer a mobile-phone based tool in multiple languages that allows workers to provide confidential feedback on living and working conditions in destination countries, enabling engineering/construction project managers and contractors to be better informed and responsive to worker welfare concerns.
“These are innovative new solutions to long-standing problems,” said Chen. “We hope they can provide a foundation for progress and look forward to working with the teams and supporting the development of these ideas into real tools over the next year.”

हुमानिटी युनाईटेडद्वारा टेकक्याम्प नेपालका अनुदानप्राप्तकर्ता घोषणा
वासिंङटन, डिसी – विदेशमा काम गर्ने वा वैदेशकि रोजगारीमा जान ईच्छुकको संरक्षणका लागि प्रविधी विकास गर्न चाहने टेकक्याम्प नेपालका तीन सहभागी टीमलाई हुमानिटी युनाईटेडले अनुदान दिने घोषणा आज गरेको छ । एफवानसफ्ट समुह, वल्र्ड एजुकेसन इन्क र काराभान स्टुडियो साथै कार्यान्वयन साझेदार सिएचटुएमले एकमुष्ठ तीनलाख अमेरिकी डलर (३००,०००.००) तिनीहरुको प्रविधीमा आधारित समाधान विकास गर्न नेपाली ह्युम्यानिटी युनाईटेडबाट अनुदान प्राप्त गरेका हुन् । जनचासोको मोबाईल एप्स समाधानहरुमा आधारित लागि पनि एउटा फेसबुक एफबिस्टार्ट प्याकेज बाट पुरस्कृत गरिएको छ ।
हुमानिटी युनाईटेड, नेपालस्थित अमेरिकी दुतावास र मानव बेचविखन अनुगमन गर्ने अमेरिकी विदेश मन्त्रालयस्थित कार्यालयले टेकक्याम्प नेपाल आयोजनागरि अमेरिका, नेपाल र कतारका स्थानिय तथा अन्तराष्ट्रिय विज्ञ, व्यवसायी, उद्यमी, नागरिक समुह र सरकारी प्रतिनीधीलाई गत सेप्टेम्बरमा तीनदिन एकै स्थानमा ल्याइएको थियो । काठमाडौंमा भएको उक्त कार्यक्रमको उद्देश्य प्राविधीक समाधान मार्फत नेपाली कामदारमाथि हुने शोषण कम गर्ने र उनीहरुको संरक्षण गर्ने थियो । नेपाली आप्रवासीले सामना गरिरहेका दुई मूख्य चुनौतीः शुल्कले जन्माएको जोखिम र कामदारको पिडा कम गर्नमा लागेका तगाराहरु हटाउनका लागि प्रविधी विकास तथा कार्यान्वयनमा यि समाधानलाई छनोट गरिएको हो ।
“कठिन चुनौती सामना गर्न प्रायः नयाँ सोच र उर्जा आवश्यक पर्छ । यि समाधानको विकास र कायान्वयन सहि दिशाका उत्साहित पाइला हुन्,” हुमानिटी युनाईटेडमा यो अभियानकी प्रमुख क्याथरिन चेनले भनिन् ।
चुनौतीको आकार र प्रकार हेर्दा, आप्रवासी कामदारले भोगीरहेको समस्याहरु समाधान गर्न एकलो संस्था, व्यक्ति र सरकारबाट सम्भव छैन् । यद्दपि, यि नयाँ बिधि र तरिकाले नेपाल र गन्तब्य मुलुकका कैयन चुनौती समाना गर्ने सम्भावाना रहेकोछ । ति आयोजना हुन् :
–एफवानसफ्ट समुह र त्यसको साझेदार इसेवाले आप्रवासीको भुक्तानी मोबाईल मनि सेवा मार्फत गर्ने पाईलट आयोजना सञ्चालन गर्नेछन्, जसले अहिलेको नगद कारोबारको पारदर्शी विकल्प प्रस्तुत गर्नेछ ।
–वल्र्ड एजुकेसन इन्कले वित्तिय साक्षरता र व्यवस्थापन उपकरण र सुरक्षित आप्रवासन समावेस भएको वेव र मोबाईल एप्स बनाउने छ । कामदारले उनीहरु विदेश जाने तयारी गर्दा नेपालमा र गन्तव्य राष्ट्रमा पुगेपछि पनि ति दुवैको प्रयोग गर्न सक्ने छन् ।
–काराभान स्टुडियो र सिएचटुएमले मोबाईल फोनमा आधारित उपकरण विभिन्न भाषामा बनाउने छन् जसले गन्तव्य देशमा बसोवास र कामको अवस्था बारेमा कामदारले गोप्य जानकारी दिन सक्नेछन्, यसबाट इन्जिनियरिङ÷निर्माण आयोजना व्यवस्थापक र ठेकदारले राम्रो जानकारी पाउने छन् र कामदारको विषयमा जिम्मेवार बन्नेछन् ।
“यो अविस्कार लामो समयदेखि थाँति रहेका समस्याहरुको नयाँ समाधान हो,” चेनले भनिन् । “हामीले आशा लिएका छौ, तिनीहरुले प्रगतिको जग राख्ने छन् र ति समुहसँग काम गर्दै जादाँ साथै आगामी वर्ष यि सोचलाई उपकरणको रुपमा विकास गर्दै जानेछौ ।”
