Get to Know Humanity United

Humanity United works to build peace, promote justice, and advance human freedom in the areas of the globe where these ideals are challenged most. We aim to leverage the best of our resources—from grant-making to advocacy to Humanity United-led initiatives to promote the issues we care about—to trigger exponential impact.

This year was one of unprecedented change for Humanity United, both to our programs and operations.

Our President & CEO oversees all aspects of Humanity United’s strategic development and operations, including our international grant-making portfolio and organization-led partnerships and initiatives. As an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees, the President & CEO works closely with our founders and board members to ensure alignment between Humanity United’s strategic direction and values, and achievement of the organization’s mission.

The Investment Team leads our grant-making and direct impact activities, in alignment with Humanity United’s strategic organizational objectives.

The Policy & Government Relations team leads Humanity United’s advocacy and outreach efforts to drive momentum for policy change among U.S. leaders, multilateral institutions, international nonprofits, and other key partners. We also build policy advocacy capacity among our grantees and like-minded organizations, fostering coalitions and providing strategic advice.

Influencing perception of the issues we care about and behaviors of key audiences is critical to achieving meaningful change in our fields of work. Our Strategic Communications team strives to advance understanding of our programmatic areas, attract influential partners, and strengthen internal capacity and cohesion to help others understand our mission and strategy.

Led by the Chief Operating Officer in San Francisco, who works with the senior leadership team to formulate and implement Humanity United’s strategic priorities, the Operations team drives Humanity United’s monitoring and evaluation, grants management, financial management, human resources, information technology, and administrative support.

Perhaps the most visible change to our organization was the move of our California office. Humanity United’s main office left its home with fellow Omidyar Group organizations in Redwood City, Calif. and moved to San Francisco, where we joined a growing number of foundations and nonprofit organizations in the Presidio. The move positioned our West Coast team to become more active in the San Francisco human rights sphere.
