Philippe Sion joins Humanity United on August 1st as Managing Director, overseeing the Forced Labor & Human Trafficking portfolio. In this role, Philippe will apply his two decades of experience in social change as he leads HU’s teams and efforts to combat human trafficking and modern slavery. Working with the field and alongside HU’s partners and staff, he will develop, refine, and implement strategies with an eye toward learning and impact.
Prior to joining HU, Philippe Sion was a Managing Director at FSG (formerly the Foundation Strategy Group), a global consulting firm supporting leaders in creating social change. At FSG, Philippe dedicated a large portion of his time to working with foundations on systems change strategies and collective impact. He managed FSG’s partnerships with several Fortune 500 corporations, advising them on corporate philanthropy, corporate social responsibility, and shared value. Philippe also co-led the firm’s working group on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Philippe previously worked in social and public sector consulting at both the Bridgespan Group and McKinsey & Company, held a research fellowship at the McKinsey Global Institute, and served as an Associate Director of the World Economic Forum, where he oversaw the economics and finance sessions for the annual meeting in Davos. Philippe has lived and worked in Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the U.S. As the son of two refugees, Humanity United’s mission has both professional and personal resonance for him.
Melanie Greenberg will join Humanity United on October 1st as Managing Director, overseeing the Peacebuilding & Conflict Transformation portfolio. In this role, Melanie will build on her years of leadership in the peacebuilding field, and informed by HU’s past work, will develop, refine, and implement strategies to build peace and counter violent conflict. She will also oversee HU’s office in Washington, DC.
Melanie comes to HU from the Alliance for Peacebuilding (AfP), where she served until recently as President and CEO. Before joining AfP, Melanie was the President and Founder of the Cypress Fund for Peace and Security, a foundation making grants in the areas of peacebuilding and nuclear nonproliferation. She has also served as a visiting scholar at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies, focusing on issues of justice in post-conflict peacebuilding; and as director of the Conflict Resolution Program at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Melanie previously served as associate director of the Stanford Center for International Security and Cooperation and deputy director of the Stanford Center on International Conflict and Negotiation.
In her work on international conflict resolution, Melanie has helped design and facilitate public peace processes in the Middle East, Northern Ireland, and the Caucasus. She has taught advanced courses in international conflict resolution, multi-party conflict resolution, and negotiation at Stanford Law School, Georgetown University Law Center, and the Elliott School of George Washington University. She was lead editor and chapter author of the volume Words over War: Mediation and Arbitration to Prevent Deadly Conflict (Rowman & Littlefield, 2000), and co-editor and chapter author of Civil Society, Peace and Power (Rowman & Litflefield, 2016). Melanie is a member of the International Advisory Board of the United States Institute of Peace and serves on numerous non-profit boards.
