A Global Day of Action for Sudan
January 07, 2010
What are you doing this Saturday? Around the world, conscientious citizens, Sudan activists, and musicians will gather to mark the fifth anniversary of the “Comprehensive Peace Agreement” , the deal that brought an end to the 22-year civil war between Sudan’s North and South.
Sudan365, a year of campaigning for Sudan, brings together leading human rights organizations to mount a strong call to action, beginning on this important anniversary. A Beat for Peace is the coalition’s kick-off event this Saturday, January 9, and will be marked by drumming rallies around the world.
Just one year from now, a trial period set out in the 2005 peace deal will end, and southerners will vote on whether to remain united with the North, or to secede and form a new country.
The CPA was a landmark agreement through which the governing parties of the North and South pledged to work together to “make unity attractive,” but which recognized the right of the southerners to choose independence through a referendum in January 2011. With just one year left and many contentious issues unresolved , tension is mounting between North and South. There is a growing fear that violence will resume , thrusting Sudan’s war-weary people back into danger.
Join us on Saturday, January 9 in one of the many participating cities to make a loud collective call for our leaders to take urgent diplomatic action to prevent a return to violence in Sudan at this critical juncture.
