Humanity United
Approach
Each of us has a role to play in the fight against modern-day slavery. With government, businesses, civil society, and individuals working together in communities and at the national and international levels, we can eradicate slavery forever.
Humanity United supports structural interventions that change the underlying dynamics allowing slavery to exist. We believe that a comprehensive approach – improving public policy and strengthening legal infrastructures, raising awareness, and investing in research to advance the field of knowledge and uncover innovative solutions – is the best way to eliminate slavery for good.
Improving Public Policy and Strengthening Legal Infrastructures
We support advocacy for legislation that prevents modern-day slavery from occurring, prosecutes and punishes slaveholders, and protects victims through rehabilitation and social services. Because we believe that a coalition of groups working in concert is stronger than the sum of their individual parts, we seek to support joint legislative and policy proposals initiated by a coalition of organizations. We also provide support for training, capacity building, and technical assistance to organizations focused on strengthening anti-slavery legislation and policy.
Raising Awareness
We at Humanity United believe that raising awareness among the broader community, law enforcement officials, and government leaders is an essential element of the fight against modern-day slavery. Through communications research, social change media, and other initiatives, we support a wide range of actors as they play their roles in building a clear and compelling dialogue to end modern-day slavery.
Advancing Understanding and Uncovering Solutions Through Research
We support actionable research that identifies the root causes of slavery; clarifies the magnitude, scope, and nature of the problem; evaluates best practices; and identifies effective and innovative solutions. In addition, we support research and other initiatives that can more effectively incorporate private sector solutions. Research funded by Humanity United is intended to inform policy dialogue and decision making at all levels of the anti-slavery debate, from community-managed programs to high-level legislative and executive branch policymakers. Humanity United also supports the development of anti-slavery–movement leadership and facilitates dialogue between thought leaders, practitioners, the policy community, and other stakeholders to enrich and inform the discussion on how best to end slavery.
